The Legend of Aang/Korra

From 2005 to 2008, Nickelodeon aired three seasons (‘Books’) of Avatar: The Last Airbender, presenting a fantasy world predominantly inspired by aspects of East Asian culture.

The series begins over a century after the disappearance of the Avatar, a spiritual being with the ability to manipulate all four elements. In his absence, the world has been overtaken by the Fire Nation, led by their tyrannical Fire Lord (voiced by Mark Hamill).

To adhere to the pattern of the Avatar Cycle, the latest incarnation of this legendary figure is a young Air Nomad called Aang (Zach Tyler Eisen), his predecessor having been the Firebender Roku (James Garrett). Though he was born shortly after Roku’s demise, Aang has been encased in ice since the advent of the war, and because of this, he has been unable to interfere. Fortunately, Sokka (Jack De Sena) and Katara (Mae Whitman), two siblings of the Southern Water Tribe, find and liberate him. Faced with the horrors that have been committed by the Fire Nation, Aang knows that he must master the remaining elements before the rise of Sozin’s Comet, which will give the Firebenders unimaginable power. His journey to do so takes him around the world, encompassing places such as the icy dwelling of the Northern Water Tribe, the impenetrable city of Ba Sing Se, and the scorched lands of the Fire Nation.

After the conclusion of Aang’s story, the journey remains unfinished. Succeeding him as the master of the elements is Korra (Janet Varney), who hails from the Southern Water Tribe. A prodigy capable of bending water, earth, and fire in her early youth, she finds herself faced with threats beyond her level of expertise: Amon (Steve Blum), Kuvira (Zelda Williams), and Tarrlock (Dee Bradley Baker) — among others. Thankfully, she does not have to face these enemies alone, aided by Mako (David Faustino), Bolin (P.J. Byrne), Asami (Seychelle Gabriel), Naga (Baker), and Pobu (Baker).
