Welcome To NERV

Created by Hideaki Anno (writer and director), Neon Genesis Evangelion is a Japanese media franchise that made its debut in a 1994 manga series. Khara, an animation studio, released the popular anime of the same name shortly after. This show aired from October 1995 to March 1996.

Evangelion is set fifteen years after a destructive event known as the Second Impact, a large explosion in Antarctica that threw the Earth off its axis and caused the deaths of billions of people. In response to the appearance of a new threat (beings known as ‘Angels’), the paramilitary organisation NERV rallies a group of children to pilot giant mechas called ‘Evangelions’ (or EVAs).

Shinji Ikari, a teenage boy recruited by Gendo (his father), takes on the role as protagonist. He is joined by Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu. Throughout the course of the series, a significant amount of attention is focused on these characters — giving audiences insight into their emotional circumstances.

The show is regarded as a classic amongst anime fans. Despite its outward appearance as an ordinary mecha series, Evangelion is well known for its exploration of psychological, religious, and philosophical themes.

In addition to the core anime series, there have been two follow-up films: Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (March 1997) and The End Of Evangelion (July 1997). These films aimed to rectify the controversial ending of the core series, providing new footage. Other forms of media have also been released to capitalise on the show’s immense popularity, including radio dramas, books, video games, and an alternate-reality film series (Rebuild Of Evangelion).
