Being A Monster

Created by Sui Ishida, Tokyo Ghoul is an anime based on the manga series of the same name, which was published in the Weekly Young Jump (a magazine owned by Shueisha) between 2011 and 2014. The show made its debut in 2013, introducing audiences to Ken Kanekiwho, a young college student who becomes a half-ghoul.

In the Tokyo Ghoul world, ‘ghouls’ are monstrous beings that consume human flesh. However, they appear entirely human. Ken encountered a ghoul while on a date with Rize Kamishiro, who attempted to eat him. Recovering from the attack in hospital, he discovers that some of Rize’s organs were transferred into his body, a process that made him a hybrid of the two species. As he now requires human flesh to survive, Ken struggles to adapt to his new life.

The owners of the ‘Anteiku’ coffee shop, who are ghouls themselves, take him under their wing and teach him how to live as one of them. With their help, Ken tries to keep his identity hidden from those around him — especially Hideyoshi Nagachika, his best friend.
